The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Sparks Excitement for Future Bethesda Remasters

Following the warm reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda fans are eagerly speculating about which classic might get the remaster treatment next. With strong rumors circulating about a Fallout 3 remake (fueled by a 2023 leak), attention has turned to how Bethesda could enhance this beloved 2008 post-apocalyptic adventure.

Combat Evolution Ahead?

Bruce Nesmith, one of Fallout 3's key designers, openly acknowledges the game's "rough" gunplay mechanics. He anticipates significant improvements in this area for any potential remaster.

Speaking with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested a remastered Fallout 3 would likely adopt the more refined shooting mechanics from Fallout 4.

"Fallout 4's combat evolution reveals exactly what Bethesda considered necessary changes from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained. "The team put enormous effort into transforming the gunplay for Fallout 4 because our original shooter mechanics in Fallout 3 represented Bethesda's first attempt at FPS-style gameplay."

The Oblivion Remaster Blueprint

The successful Oblivion overhaul, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, sets an impressive precedent. Beyond expected 4K/60fps enhancements, the remaster delivers meaningful upgrades across leveling systems, character creation, combat animations and UI design. Additional dialogue, improved third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology further elevate the experience - leading some fans to argue it deserves the "remake" label.

Nesmith believes Fallout 3 could receive similar transformative treatment. "The original combat didn't measure up to contemporary shooters even in 2008," he admitted. "While it's an RPG first, the shooting mechanics needed work - which Fallout 4 addressed beautifully. I'd expect similar enhancements if they pursue a remaster."

He added: "The Oblivion remaster didn't just match Skyrim 2011 - in many ways it surpasses even the Anniversary Edition visuals. It's practically 'Oblivion 2.0.'"

A Busy Road Ahead for Bethesda

The studio has multiple irons in the fire - development on The Elder Scrolls VI continues (along with potential Starfield expansions), while remaster projects, Fallout 76 updates, and the hit TV show's upcoming New Vegas season promise exciting content for fans in the coming years.
