Genshin Updates Spark Outrage, Devs Dejected
HoYoverse CEO Liu Wei recently shared the impact of intense player feedback on the Genshin Impact development team. His comments shed light on a challenging year for the game and its creators.
Genshin Impact Developers Overwhelmed by Negative Fan Reaction
Team Remains Dedicated to Improvement and Player Feedback
(c) SentientBamboo In a recent Shanghai event, Liu Wei candidly discussed the "anxiety and confusion" within the Genshin Impact team due to strong negative feedback from players, particularly following the Lunar New Year 2024 updates. As recorded and translated by SentientBamboo on YouTube, Wei described the intense criticism as deeply demoralizing: "Over the past year, the Genshin team and I experienced significant anxiety and confusion. We faced difficult times, overwhelmed by criticism, some extremely harsh, leaving the entire team feeling useless."This statement follows a series of controversies surrounding recent updates, including the 4.4 Lantern Rite event, criticized for insufficient rewards (only three intertwined fates). Many players expressed disappointment with the perceived lack of substantial updates compared to titles like Honkai: Star Rail, leading to negative reviews and backlash. Comparisons to Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves, highlighting differences in gameplay and character movement, further fueled the discontent.
The 4.5 Chronicled Banner's gacha mechanics also drew criticism, as did concerns about the representation of characters inspired by real-world cultures.
While visibly emotional, Wei acknowledged these concerns, stating, "Some felt our team was arrogant and unresponsive. But we are gamers too; we understand player feelings. We were simply overwhelmed. We needed to calm down and identify genuine player concerns."
Despite the challenges, Liu expressed optimism, reaffirming the team's commitment to improvement and listening to the community. "We can't meet every expectation," he admitted, "but the past year, while difficult, also brought courage and trust from our players. Moving forward, let's focus on creating the best possible experience."
