Slitterhead Probably \"Rough Around The Edges\" But Will Be Fresh and Original
Keiichiro Toyama, the visionary behind the Silent Hill franchise, is crafting a unique horror-action experience with his new game, Slitterhead. This article delves into Toyama's comments, exploring his commitment to originality and the potential "rough edges" of this ambitious project.
Silent Hill's Legacy Meets Modern Innovation
Launching November 8th, Slitterhead, from Toyama's Bokeh Game Studio, promises a thrilling blend of action and horror. Toyama himself acknowledges a potentially "rough around the edges" feel, stating in a GameRant interview, "From the very first ‘Silent Hill,’ we have maintained a commitment to freshness and originality, even if it means being a bit rough around the edges...That attitude has remained consistent throughout my works and in ‘Slitterhead.’"
This raw, experimental approach is a departure from the polished AAA titles dominating the market. While Toyama's 2008 Siren: Blood Curse was his last foray into horror before the Gravity Rush series, Slitterhead marks a significant return, carrying the weight of expectation for a genre-defining experience. The "rough edges," he suggests, are a byproduct of prioritizing innovation over flawless polish.
The "roughness" might stem from Bokeh's independent status, employing a smaller team compared to large AAA studios. However, the involvement of industry veterans like producer Mika Takahashi, character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa, and composer Akira Yamaoka suggests a high level of expertise and creative vision. The game's unique gameplay, blending elements of Gravity Rush and Siren, further supports Toyama's claim of originality. Only time will tell if these "rough edges" enhance the game's experimental nature or present a genuine concern.
Kowlong: A City Steeped in Mystery
Slitterhead is set in the fictional city of Kowlong (a blend of Kowloon and Hong Kong), a 1990s-inspired Asian metropolis infused with supernatural elements reminiscent of seinen manga like Gantz and Parasyte. Players assume the role of a "Hyoki," a spirit-like entity capable of inhabiting different bodies to combat grotesque and unpredictable enemies known as "Slitterheads." These aren't your typical horror monsters; they're a terrifying yet strangely humorous blend of human and nightmare.
