Bloodborne Fans Celebrate 10th Anniversary, Rally for Return to Yharnam Amid No Sequel or Update
Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne, FromSoftware's iconic PlayStation 4 title that launched on March 24, 2015. To celebrate this milestone, fans are coming together for another "Return to Yharnam" community event, a testament to the game's enduring legacy. Bloodborne not only solidified FromSoftware's reputation as a top-tier developer but also garnered widespread critical and commercial success, setting the stage for what many hoped would be a series of sequels or updates.
Yet, a decade later, fans are still left wondering why Sony has not pursued a remaster, sequel, or even a next-gen update that would bring Bloodborne to 60fps. The community's clamor for more Bloodborne has been met with silence from Sony, making it one of the most perplexing decisions in the gaming industry.
Earlier this year, following his departure from Sony, PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida offered some insight into the situation during an interview with Kinda Funny Games. Yoshida's theory, based on personal speculation and not insider knowledge, suggests that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and creator of Bloodborne, might be hesitant to allow anyone else to work on the game due to his deep personal attachment to it. "Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne," Yoshida noted, suggesting that Miyazaki's busy schedule and success with other projects like Elden Ring could be factors in the lack of follow-up.
Since Bloodborne, Miyazaki has been involved in directing Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the highly successful Elden Ring, which is now set to receive a multiplayer spin-off. Despite frequent questions about Bloodborne, Miyazaki often redirects the conversation, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he did acknowledge last year that the game could benefit from modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, the community has taken matters into their own hands. Modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience, but Sony has responded with takedowns, as seen with the 60fps mod by Lance McDonald and the Bloodborne Kart project by Lilith Walther. Meanwhile, recent advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, a breakthrough covered by Digital Foundry. This development has led some to speculate about Sony's aggressive response to such efforts.

With no official word from Sony, fans continue to organize events like the "Return to Yharnam" on Bloodborne's 10th anniversary. Participants are encouraged to start new characters, summon cooperators and invaders, and leave messages within the game to mark their involvement in this community-driven celebration. As the future of Bloodborne remains uncertain, these fan-led initiatives may be the closest the community gets to revisiting the haunting world of Yharnam.
